When to Start Dental Care

child in dental chair looking in mirrorDentistry is not just about teeth, it’s about the health of the gums, lips, inside the mouth, and the growth pattern of the jaw and face. By visiting us early on, small problems can be treated before they become both more serious and expensive to treat. Malocclusions can be detected from the age of 2 years old and successfully taken care of to prevent costly and lengthy services later.

Typically, our team suggests taking your child to see the dentist when your baby’s first tooth comes through or when they reach 12 months. The more times your child sees the dentist and has a positive experience, the more rapport and trust they build with them.

Dr Sally, our Brisbane Dentist, remarks, “For most people, dental fear develops due to bad experiences in childhood. It’s crucial to condition kids from an early age with regular dental visits in a loving and caring environment.”

NEW PATIENTS

A Smile That Lasts a Lifetime!

Excellence in Dentistry believes in starting excellent oral health care early in a person’s life, so we focus on helping your kids feel comfortable coming to the dentist, teaching them to care for their teeth and preventing problems.

Keeping your child cavity-free can be difficult. It’s important to teach your children how to brush and floss their teeth correctly from an early age. It’s not just about brushing! Your child’s visit is as special to us as yours, and together we ensure your child has the best chance for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Mouthguards

Save your kids’ and your own precious teeth by wearing a simple mouthguard when playing sports, riding skates, or even bikes, especially BMX. Be a role model for them and teach them to protect their teeth. Start early with personal safety gear, and your kids will learn to take their safety seriously.

Mouthguards are a protective device for the mouth that covers the teeth and gums to reduce and prevent injury to the teeth, arches, lips and gums, and most often in contact sports.

Fissure Sealants

One preventive measure to protect children’s back teeth is the use of fissure sealants. This is a protective plastic coating applied to the chewing surfaces of newly erupted molars at risk of decay. These surfaces have small grooves or fissures, which often extend straight down into the tooth itself.

No matter how well the teeth are brushed, these fissures are very difficult to clean thoroughly. Bacteria and food particles stick to them and eventually cause decay. Fissure sealants completely seal off these grooves, preventing food particles or bacteria from settling in, while not affecting the normal chewing function of teeth.

Making Oral Health Fun

The team at Excellence in Dentistry believe your child’s oral health needs to be part of their daily routine. It is vital that children learn about proper oral hygiene from an early age, and the benefits they can gain from it.

Our team members have children of their own and understand the need to make dental hygiene fun and easy for children. Besides educating kids and their parents about the proper way to brush and floss, a comprehensive oral exam will reveal the specific dental needs of the patient and if any treatment is required.

The earlier children begin regular dental checkups, the healthier their mouths will stay throughout their lives!

About The Child Dental Benefits Schedule

In Australia, children between 2 and 18 years old may have access to means-tested basic dental care through the public system, as part of the Commonwealth-funded Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). To check if your child is eligible for the CDBS, go to the Department of Human Services website.

Benefits for basic dental services, including examinations, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions, are capped at $1,000 per child over two consecutive calendar years. For more information, click here.
